How To Apply Wall Art Vinyl
Easy installation of your new vinyl designs
Applying your new vinyl designs to walls is not difficult. The vinyl is mailed in a three layer piece, with the bottom layer being the backing from the original roll, the middle layer being the actual vinyl that will be adhered to the wall, and the top layer is application tape. A squeegee will be included to help make installation easier.
- A Google search for "dry hinge method" will result in videos of application, but here are the basic steps:
- 1 - Prepare the surface by cleaning the wall or other substrate with rubbing alcohol.
- 2 - Position the piece on the wall. If it is taller than it is wide, put a strip of masking tape across the middle horizontally. If it is wider than it is tall, put a strip of masking tape across the middle vertically.
- 3 - Lift one side and peel the backing from the vinyl and application tape.
- 4 - Use scissors to cut off the backing that you just separated. Discard it.
- 5 - Starting from the middle, press the vinyl with application tape to the wall and work your way outward. You should be able to do this with just your hand. Be careful to apply it evenly, without bubbles or ridges.
- 6 - Once the one side is applied, remove the masking tape and lift the piece so that you can peel off the other half of the backing.
- 7 - Smooth down the other side after removing the backing, just as you did in step 5. Start from the center and work your way outward.
- 8 - Use your squeegee or a credit card or something with a straight edge and vigorously go over the application tape. Be sure to press the piece well onto the wall. This will help the next step.
- 9 - It is now time to remove the application tape. Peel one corner up and then pull the application tape away from that corner slowly, keeping it close to itself as you peel it back. This will help the vinyl stick to the wall. Go slowly and carefully. If the vinyl comes up with the application tape, smooth the tape back down on that trouble area and vigorously rub with your squeegee or other tool and then try peeling again.
- 10 - Once the application tape is removed, use your squeegee to smooth the vinyl to the surface. Your vinyl is now applied to the wall properly! That wasn't that hard, was it?
To remove, use your fingernails or something with a dull blade to peel up a corner of the piece, and then pull it back close to itself, similar to the way you removed the application tape in step 9 above. There should be no damage to the paint or the drywall. Any residue can be removed with rubbing alcohol.
